TAKE A SCROLL
Calvary Gospel Chapel was first known as the Portuguese Evangelical Church, established as a daughter church to the Plymouth Evangelical Church, on Easter Sunday 1927. For many years it continued as a Portuguese church until the 1950's when many services were held in both Portuguese and English in order to effectively reach the surrounding community.
In 1961, when the church became independent, it decided to affiliate with the Assemblies of Christian Brethren and changed its name to Southampton Gospel Chapel. In the 1980's a fulltime pastor and youth pastor were brought in. The meetings continued to flourish as the Word of God was taught on a consistent basis and the youth were discipled in their faith. In 1988 the church again changed its name to Calvary Gospel Chapel, in an effort to communicate a more biblical focus.
Calvary Gospel Chapel has enjoyed a rich biblical heritage and solid biblical teaching over the many years of its existence. It is our endeavor to continue the traditions of being a Christ honoring, biblically sound, discipleship focused church.
Our purpose is to reach the world (our community) for Christ through the PREACHING of His Word, TEACHING every believer and EQUIPPING each to grow in LOVE and SERVICE for God.
Our desire is for you to be fully aware of who we are and why we exist. Please note, this is not exhaustive information about our church and practices but only an informational resource.
We look forward to ministering to you over time and trust that you not only find Christ here, but that you would be encouraged to grow in your relationship with the Lord and his people. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us that we might be of better service to you. May the Grace of God and the Love of Christ rule in your heart.
We believe God has given our local assembly four fundamental responsibilities. God has ordained these methods to build his church and to ultimately enhance his glory. All the endeavors and ministries of Calvary Gospel Chapel must contribute to accomplishing these four fundamental responsibilities.
1) Preaching / Evangelism: Communicate the gospel message to those who have not trusted Christ as Savior (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:16-20). We will strive to accomplish this responsibility personally, in our community and through support of world missions.
2) Teaching / Exhortation: Proclaim sound doctrine -- the truth of God's Word - with personal holiness as the final goal (Colossians 1:28; 2 Timothy 4:1,2; Titus 2:1).
3) Equipping / Loving: Train every believer to be a mature and productive member of God's family, in accordance with their individual gifts (Ephesians 4:11-13; 2 Timothy 2:2). We will strive to be faithful in prayer, in mutual edification, in spiritual fellowship and through collective worship.
4) Service / Serving: Minister to the needs of others in love, practically imitating the sacrificial love of Jesus (Ephesians 5:1,2; Philippians 2:3,4).
SCRIPTURE: We believe the Old and New Testaments alone to be the inspired, revealed Word of God, without error, authoritative and sufficient in all matters pertaining to life and godliness.
GOD: We believe there is only one God and Sustainer of all, existing in three distinct Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Co-equal in nature and authority and possessing the totality of the divine essence.
JESUS CHRIST & SALVATION: We believe Jesus is the eternal, infinite God-man, except without sin, born of a virgin. He is the perfect savior having died, was buried and rose again the third day. He is exalted and will imminently return. We believe that salvation is entirely a work of God's grace, by faith in the substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus Christ, on the Cross.
MAN & SIN: We believe man was created by God, in His image with mind, will and emotion but was marred through sin. Man is guilty of original and personal sin and therefore is totally depraved and condemned.
HOLY SPIRIT & CHURCH: We believe the Holy Spirit is the eternal Spirit of God, personal and possessing the entirety of the divine essence. He indwells, seals and empowers every believer. We believe the church is the fellowship of all true followers of Christ, who make up the Body and Bride of Christ. It is universal (or invisible) in scope and local (visible) in purpose, practicing Baptism and Communion.
FUTURE STATE & LAST THINGS: We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the wicked, to judgment and righteous, to reward. We believe in the imminent rapture (Pre-tribulation, Pre-millennial), the Great tribulation, the bodily and visible second coming of Christ and His Millennial reign on the earth, the final judgment and eternal bliss.
SATAN & DEMONS: We believe Satan is a powerful living spirit created by God but now fallen and desperately wicked. He is opposed to all that is good and is the avowed enemy of Christ, Christians and the gospel. Satan is aided by myriads of fallen angels, or demons.
